Lost in Oz!

Hi there

 

I am a registered massage therapst from Ontario Canada visiting in Australia on a holiday maker visa.  I was hoping to work as a therapist here but am having some difficulty with the paperwork component of things. If you have any information that could help me get started I would really appreciate it.  I have been in contact withg the association in Melbourne and they said a school could assess my qualifications here bit I am not sure where there are any schools here in Sydney.

Sorry for the delay in response, we have been flooded with enquiries lately and it is hard to keep up with them all. First, hopefully you are still in Australia, if not our apologies for not getting to you sooner. There are two ways to get your quals recognised here. One is by contacting VetAssess. VETASSESS can be reached at www.skillsassess.com

The other is to get recognition through an RTO (registered training organisation) There are quite a lot of them that offer massage therapy and these are the ones to contact. Below are some of the key Sydney ones. Ring them and ask for assistance. The TAFE college is a government funded one but both should provide the most information and support.

JH, as the industry here is not regulated, you don't have to have your quals recognised by anyone. It is perfectly legal for you to rock up and start practising. You just have to make sure you have a tax file number and ensure that you declare your earnings. Insurance would be a good idea too and this is cheaper to buy in Australia than Canada.
